High school football in Florida’s Panhandle: Week 6 top performers – The News Herald
Week Six of the high school football season is in the books and there was no shortage of players making their impact felt on offense, defense, and special teams.
Every week throughout the season we’ll highlight the top performers from the weekend from the News Herald’s coverage area.
Mike Johnson, running back, Bay High School
Johnson had a career night for the Tornadoes in a double overtime win over North Bay Haven, rushing 20 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He scored two touchdowns on two carries in the overtime sessions, including the game-winner from 10 yards out.
Chris Jackson, defensive end, Mosley High School
Jackson posted 11 tackles in the Dolphins’ 41-14 win over Choctawhatchee, including three tackles for loss, as well as two sacks and four quarterback hurries. For the season, Jackson leads the Dolphins with 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 10 quarterback hurries.
Cole Horton, quarterback, Mosley High School
Horton accounted for four two touchdowns on the night, passing for two and running for two. He completed 9 of 16 passes for 192 yards while rushing nine times for 79 yards. Horton has accounted for 19 touchdowns on the season, 13 passing and six rushing.
Nate Webb, running back, North Bay Haven
Webb rushed the ball 23 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ 33-27 double overtime loss to Bay High. Webb has gone over the century mark rushing for three consecutive games.
Zac Edwards, defensive end, Rutherford High School
Edwards had a sack and an interception, along with a tackle for loss, in the Rams’ 14-0 loss to Walton. Edwards has three sacks this season.
Peyton Gay, quarterback, Bozeman
Gay accounted for three total touchdowns in the Bucks’ 47-6 victory over Vernon, passing for two scores and rushing for another.
Colby Jones, quarterback, Holmes County
Jones completed 18 of 31 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns against Blountstown, including the game-winner to Kevin Belser with just over a minute to play in the fourth quarter of a 21-20 win. Jones has thrown for 1,162 yards and 17 touchdown passes for the season.
Zay McDaniel, running back, Wewahitchka
McDaniel just missed out on a 300-yard rushing performance against Freeport, totaling 299 yards on the ground on 27 carries, scoring three touchdowns. McDaniel has rushed for 548 yards and six touchdowns over his last two games.
Seth Hernandez, quarterback, Arnold High School
Hernandez had his best night of the season at quarterback for Arnold, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Sam Mudge and Jordan White and adding a 90-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute of the first half in the Marlins’ 35-21 loss to Pensacola.
Randy Pittman, tight end/defensive end, Mosley High School
Pittman scored two touchdowns against Choctaw, one rushing and one receiving, bringing in four catches for 54 yards. He also added two tackles for loss on defense.
Cal Corbin, safety, North Bay Haven
Corbin made 13 total tackles against Bay High, including 11 solo stops, and added his second interception of the season as well.
Landon Hysmith, running back, Wewahitchka
Hysmith put together a big rushing night of his own for the Gators, carrying the ball 25 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
Josiah McCall, wide receiver, Mosley High School
McCall had five receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown with a long catch of 66 yards. The senior has made at least one touchdown catch in five of six Dolphins games this season and leads the team with 431 receiving yards and seven touchdown grabs.
Chad Allgood, safety, Rutherford High School
Allgood had eight tackles, including seven solo stops, and three tackles for loss against the Braves.
Matthew Tew, linebacker, North Bay Haven
Tew had a monster night for the Buccaneers defense, making 15 total tackles, including 10 solo stops, with six tackles for loss and a forced fumble. For the season, Tew leads the Buccaneers with 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Banks Byers, safety, Mosley High School
Banks had nine tackles, including five solo stops, and added his team-leading fourth interception of the season. The senior has picked off a pass in three consecutive games.
Tyrell McMillan, running back, Sneads High School
McMillan touched the ball just twice in the Pirates’ 41-20 win over Graceville but scored both times on runs of 58 and 48 yards.
