Harvard University hosted musical portraying Judas as a gay Asian in love with Jesus – Washington Examiner

A Harvard University theater hosted a show over the weekend depicting the story of the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot as a “gaysian love story” between two high school students.

Sophie Kim, a student at Harvard University, conceived the idea for the musical ISCARIOT last year in part from a meme on the social media website Tumblr, according to the Harvard Crimson.

“ISCARIOT’ is a heretical gaysian love story — gaysian being a portmanteau of gay and Asian,” Kim told the campus newspaper. “Jesus and Judas are high school seniors at a fancy high school in Hollywood. They are both kind of outsiders in the preppy club of the Disciples. They team up to win prom king and then shenanigans ensue. There’s a betrayal. There’s a crucifixion.”

The show ran from Dec. 1 to 4 at Harvard’s Agassiz Theater. In the interview with the Harvard Crimson, Kim said the show was essentially a cross between Jesus Christ Superstar, High School Musical, and Wicked.

The student who portrayed Judas in the show told the campus newspaper that the show is “merely just a retelling of a work of literary merit” and is not a commentary on religion.

“I think that the thing about the story is that … whether you’re religious or not, there is something about that narrative of the savior and pariah dichotomy that speaks to almost everyone,” the author Kim said. “Even if you’re not sure how you might feel about the show or its messaging, you should come to see what I think is a universal story.”
