A Jones Day partner with more than 25 years’ life sciences experience and a deep understanding of biochemistry has arrived at Greenberg Traurig in California.

Greenberg Traurig has recruited David Gay as a shareholder in its Los Angeles intellectual property (IP) and technology, and life sciences and medical technology groups.

Gay frequently acts for early stage and established pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporations on strategic counselling, acquisition, and portfolio administration related to IP, including validity and infringement mandates and post-grant proceedings. He is an accomplished adviser on corporate support matters, including due diligence connected with mergers and acquisitions agreements, financing and investment contracts.

He has advised on cutting-edge technologies in the life sciences and biochemistry context, such as metabolic engineering, protein and small molecule therapeutics, gene therapy, proteomics and nanotechnology.

Work highlights include advising Shanghai Junshi Biosciences in a research cooperation and licensing agreement with Revitope Oncology. His client list also includes Bayer CropScience and Genomatica.

Gay obtained a PhD in biochemistry before training as a lawyer, beginning his career with seven years at McDermott Will & Emery where he was elevated to partner. He was most recently a partner at Jones Day for eleven years.

In a joint statement, Greenberg Traurig IP co-chairs Ian Ballon, Viola Bensinger, Scott Bornstein and Mark Galis, spoke of the importance of IP innovation in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting Gay’s “focus on the integration of business objectives and competitive technologies” as a key strength.

Gay himself lauded the firm’s “dedication to collaboration, together with its global platform”.

Greenberg Traurig lost a restructuring and bankruptcy practitioner to Baker Botts in Houston, while it gained a senior candidate civil law notary and real estate professional from Dentons Boekel in Amsterdam, all in February.
