On Friday, the ballots of 4,500 members of the Berlin CDU base were counted. The reason for the internal vote was the hotly debated topic of same-sex marriage in Germany. A trend is emerging. The strongest party in the Bundestag continues to contribute to bringing its own image far in the direction of „backward“. Besides, it works opinion in the CDU apart. One thing is certain: it was a choice of the elderly. Angela Merkel This saves a new debate on the subject. The SPD politician Johannes Kahrs does not want to put up with this and demands the release of a vote in the Bundestag.
Over 52% of the CDU members who had voted on the subject of same-sex marriage in the last few weeks spoke out against equality in the Before out. The percentage of with supporters was 42. In Berlin So the CDU is deeply divided. The clear result is surprising, because the ballot paper had a total of seven choices. When you look at the selection, you really have to decide whether to laugh or just cry. Every means is used to delay a possible debate in the Bundestag and to keep Germany in Europe to put before the pillory. Not only the confused selection of answers, but also the question itself is cheeky. the Berlin morning post presented the ballot paper verbatim:
“The CDU Berlin has long campaigned against any form of discrimination against same-sex partnerships. Are you in favor of same-sex couples being able to marry?”
I totally agree
I tend to agree
I partly/partly agree
I tend not to agree
I don’t agree at all
I am abstaining
I don’t think the topic is important
The CDU sees itself in Berlin as an advocate against any form of discrimination against same-sex partnerships. But a same-sex marriage? Absolutely not! One would think that the members of the CDU in Berlin would have a more cosmopolitan opinion. After all, Berlin is one of the most colorful cities in the republic. The result of the vote was of course commented directly on Twitter. This is how people reacted online:

#CDU agrees against #marriageforall – so it’s clear: The CDU is far from being a modern big city party. pic.twitter.com/DMLyAGoGYk

Too few young voters took part in the election. That earned the conservative core of the CDU more votes. The top staff, however, had voted differently. So does General Secretary Kai Wegner. „I would have liked a different result,“ he told the rbb. However, he is certain that opinion will change over the next few years. Voters under the age of 59 are clearly in favor of same-sex marriage.
SPD MP Johannes Krahs does not want to wait and see for the next few years. He plans to work with the opposition to get a majority for same-sex marriage in the Bundestag. However, this must first be checked by means of an application. After all, the SPD must adhere to the coalition agreement. One thing is certain for Kahrs. „The Berlin CDU can forget the thought of wanting to be a liberal big-city party with this voting result only a year before the House of Representatives elections,“ said Krahs Focus.
So the debate could finally really get going. The conservative core of the CDU can no longer oppose the development of society for long. In the end, love wins! However, the result of the member survey should also be an incentive for the young members of the Union. Go vote more! Nothing happens from watching!
