Gay couples fight for marriage equality in India – The Times
Four years after legalising homosexuality, India’s supreme court is considering whether to defy the government and allow gay couples to marry.
Two couples have filed petitions to the court to turn their long-term relationships into marriage. A further eight petitions seeking the same objective are pending in the lower courts.
Parth Phiroze Mehrotra, 36, fell in love 17 years ago with Uday Raj, 35, after they left high school. They live in Delhi and are bringing up two boys. “We hope to tell our story and share our hopes with the court and say please give this to us, we are equal citizens,” Mehrotra, a publishing editor, told The Times.
