Fans slam FIFA having Iker Casillas deliver World Cup trophy after ‘coming out as gay’ – Daily Star
Football fans have slammed FIFA’s decision to allow Iker Casillas to carry out the World Cup trophy on Sunday afternoon.
Casillas, alongside Bollywood icon Deepika Padukone, delivered the trophy to the World Cup final in a Louis Vitton briefcase. However, in early October, the Spanish legend said “I hope you respect me – I’m gay” in deleted Twitter post.
The tweet stayed up for a little over half an hour, and Carlos Puyol responded: “It’s time to tell our story, Iker.” Casillas then claimed he was hacked, and he issued an apology to the LGTBQ community for the content of the tweet.

“FIFA inviting Iker Casillas for the trophy reveal after that horrible gay joke, in a country that criminalises homosexuality,” one fan fumed.
“FIFA’s thinking: Let’s get the former player that pretended to be gay as a joke to deliver the World Cup Trophy to the final,” a second added. And a third tweeted: “Of course, they’d have Iker Casillas bring the trophy out, given his recent mockery of coming out as a gay footballer!”
While a fourth fumed: “Iker Casillas. Really? Perhaps there to crack a few gay jokes?”
