Emmys 2022: Lizzo wins for ‘Big Grrrls,’ celebrates representation – USA TODAY
Emmy voters decided it was about damn time for Lizzo to get another award.
The Grammy-winning artist, 34, accepted the Emmy Award on Monday night for outstanding competition program for her Amazon series “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” which chronicled Lizzo’s search for backup dancers to join her world tour.
“I’m very emotional,” the singer said onstage through tears, expressing gratitude to the show’s contestants for “the stories that they shared.”
She added: “They’re not that unique, they just don’t get the platform. Let’s just tell more stories.”

Lizzo also used the moment to highlight the importance of on-screen representation.
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media … someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” she said. “If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like ‘You’re going to see that person but (expletive), it’s going to have to be you.’ “

Several moments during Emmys night celebrated representation in television.
“Abbott Elementary” actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who won outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, shared a snippet from Dianne Reeves’ 1993 song “Endangered Species” as she accepted her award onstage.

“I am an endangered species, but I sing no victim’s song / I am a woman, I am an artist, and I know where my voice belongs,” she sang.
Ralph added: “To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like. This is what striving looks like. And don’t you ever, ever give up on you.”

Jerrod Carmichael won outstanding writing for a variety special for his personal, introspective comedy special “Rothaniel,” in which he opened up about coming out as gay.
“I made something that was of great personal consequence to me and this definitely contributes to the meaning of it,” he said.
