Disney’s rebooting ‘The Proud Family’ with some amazing LGBTQ+ representation – Motherly Inc.

Disney’s The Proud Family” is getting a reboot! Even though the original show was amazing (Beyonce and Solange Knowles performed the theme song–I mean come ON how cool is that?!) the reboot looks like it’ll be just as much of a crowd-pleaser.

Plus, the revival will feature LGBTQ+ representation, which will undoubtedly be incredibly meaningful for many families who will watch.

Disney‘s “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” will pick up the story of its central character Penny Proud and also include the rest of the Proud family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and her grandmother Suga Mama (and Puff!) And of course, we can’t forget about Penny’s pals Dijonay Jones, LaCienega Boulevardez and Zoey Howzer.

The series reboot will be comprised of original cast members and a few new names: Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter. Quinto and Porter will play Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins and Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins, the adoptive parents of 14-year-old Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, voiced by the brilliant Keke “Sorry to this man” Palmer.

For the last eight years, GLAAD has analyzed each of the major film studios on their representation of queer characters, and Disney has, unfortunately, landed at the bottom of the list every year.

The fact that a huge, globally-renowned entertainment company like Disney sees the value in queer representation for children and families but is actually executing it via one of their most popular shows, well, that’s worth noting. And honestly, there’s nothing Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter can’t do—raise your hand if you’re looking forward to their brilliant voice work!

The show is currently in production at Disney Television Animation and set to launch in 2022 on Disney+.
