Disney+’s Pride Concert Was Magically Gay – Out Magazine
Disney+’s Pride Concert Was Magically Gay
The first-ever Disney+ This is Me Pride Celebration Spectacular took place this weekend, and it was filled with gay magic!
Hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Nina West, the 35-minute special featured performances from some of our favorite Disney songs with a queer twist by a diverse group of celebs.
One of our absolute favorite highlights had to be the adorable duet between real-life couple Frankie A. Rodriguez and Joe Serafini, who play Carlos and Seb on the Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Rodriguez and Serafini sang the Aladdin classic “A Whole New World,” which has to be one of the all-time best Disney love songs, and seeing it reinterpreted by two young men who love each other is warming our gay hearts!
Carlos and Seb are dating on the show, and the fact that the actors are actually together in real life makes their chemistry just explode off the screen. Here, they get a chance to take off the costumes and just be themselves, singing sweetly to each other and celebrating their love.
Other highlights include Alex Newell’s glorious turn as Ursula the Sea Witch singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” Watching Newell sing the song, you could forget that anyone else alive could ever play the role. Witch, please, who’s Melissa McCarthy?
The special also touched on some of the ways that LGBTQ+ people have contributed to Disney over the years, explaining how Ursula was inspired by actor and drag queen Divine and how many of the best Disney songs were written by Howard Ashman, a gay man who passed away from complications related to AIDS.
And don’t worry lesbians, there was content for you too! “Chance” singer Hayley Kiyoko sang the sapphic version of “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid that we’ve always needed. I can picture queer women across the country listening to this on repeat before finally texting their crush.
