Darren Kennedy’s top style tips for the A/W season – from bright prints to ’90s trends – RSVP Live

Darren Kennedy has revealed the hottest trends for this year’s A/W season – and it looks like we’re going back to the ‘90s.

Dublin native Darren is not only one of Ireland’s top stylists, he is also an experienced broadcaster with a career that has taken him all over the world.

As one of the country’s most stylish men, he certainly is the go-to guy for fashion advice and tips.

As we officially enter the A/W season, Darren has shared his predictions for what the catwalks and stores will be awash with so we can start outfit planning.

He told RSVP Live: “Trend wise, I think we’re going to continue to see that mix of fluidity. And fluidity not just in fabric, but also across collections – the blurring of lines between menswear and womenswear.

“There will be lots of geometric cutouts and interesting shapes and billowing fabrics. Think really really soft tailoring and soft lines with a touch of athleisure in there but still feeling together.”

As any fashion lover will know, trends come and go, and Darren believes ‘90s style is going to make a major comeback.

“It’s quite interesting when you look at some of the recent catwalks, if you look back at some of them from ‘98 and ‘99, they are almost identical,” he said.

“We’re kind of returning to that stage which is fun and whimsical and enjoyable.

“I’m heading to London Fashion Week the week after next, and I’m looking forward to that – there are lots of shows I can’t wait to see. This year there seems to be great energy.”

We all know Darren for his impeccable sense of style, but has he ever suffered a major fashion fail?

Well, as it turns out, the TV presenter experimented with double denim before Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake stepped on the scene.

“I took the double denim trend and multiplied it by two. I did double denim squared almost,” Darren told us.

“I wore four pieces of denim head to toe – a denim flat cap, a denim shirt, a pair of denim jeans and believe it or not, a pair of Adidas denim trainers!

“I was probably about 13 at the time and I thought it was a look. And you know what, looking back on it now, it probably is something the kids would wear today so maybe it wasn’t all bad.

“I think my timing was slightly off, but needless to say it’s not something I plan on wearing again soon. I was doing the Canadian tuxedo long before Britney and Justin!”

This month, Darren has teamed up with Boots to raise funds for their annual Boots Night Walk in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

The campaign is calling on the public to sign up and walk 5km together this autumn to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses.

This service provides end of life care for people who are living with cancer and for their families, and Darren says having had a personal experience with the disease, it was a no-brainer for him to get involved.

He said: “My granny Lilly, who had been living with cancer for quite some time, had reached a point where the hospital sent her home, there was really nothing else they could do. She lived out her last days in my family home in Santry.

“We never got to the point where a night nurse came, but the service offers ten nights free of charge for a night nurse.

“Subsequently my friend’s mother was passing away and the night nurse service was invaluable to them. It offers support, comfort and relief to families at a really difficult time.”

The in person walk will take place on Friday the 9th September at Dublin’s Phoenix Park, but don’t worry if you can’t make it.

“If you can’t join us in Phoenix Park, you can set up your own walk and a fundraising page. Just log on to bootsnightwalk.com and sign up,” Darren explained.

“And if you still want to support but you can’t join any walk, you can buy an Honour Tag, available in Boots stores nationwide in memory of someone living with or who has passed away from cancer.

“For every Honour Tag sold, Boots Ireland Team will walk one metre in that person’s honour. So there are lots of ways to get involved.”
