Darrel Williams, Willie Gay Jr. miss Chiefs practice; two others return – Arrowhead Pride

The Kansas City Chiefs conducted their tenth practice of their 2021 training camp on Sunday morning at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

After being placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID list following a positive test on Saturday, offensive lineman Darryl Williams was absent from practice.

Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. was present, but appeared without helmet and pads — indicating he would only be working with trainers during the session. He remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol — but according to the Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell, he is not expected to be in the protocol much longer.

Offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif also appeared without helmet and pads — and with his right hand in bandages. He missed Friday’s practice with a hand injury. As the Star’s Herbie Teope showed, it is his right hand that was injured.

Teope also reported that tight end Nick Keizer (back) and wide receiver Antonio Callaway (knee) were absent — along with offensive lineman Prince Tega Wanogho. As practice began, we had no explanation for the second-year lineman’s absence.

Other players present but not practicing included tight end Evan Baylis (ankle), offensive lineman Mike Remmers and defensive end Alex Okafor (hamstring). Offensive lineman Kyle Long (knee) and linebacker Malik Herring (knee) — both of whom remain on the team’s injured lists — also spent the session working with trainers.

But as The Athletic’s Nate Taylor reported, linebacker Anthony Hitchens and cornerback Deandre Baker both appeared on the field with pads and helmets — ready to participate. The team has been working Hitchens back into the lineup after he suffered a hamstring injury during the first day of full practices. Baker was rested for a couple of days last week as he continues to return from the broken femur he sustained late last season.
