Compass hosts 20th ‘Stonewall Ball’ celebrating gay rights movement in West Palm Beach – WPBF West Palm Beach

THE STONEWALL BALL TONIGHT AN OFFICIALS TELL ME THEY’RE RAMPING UP SECURITY MEASURES TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS SAFE. WE’VE ADDED UNIFORMED AND ARMED POLICE. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE METAL DETECTION AS WELL AS BAG CHECKS, AND THEN THE SCIENCE CENTER HAS CAMERAS ALL AROUND THEY HAVE ADDITIONAL STAFF AND SO DO WE IT’S A SPARKLY CELEBRATION FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY HERE IN PALM BEACH COUNTY. WE’RE REALLY EXCITED TO HOST COMPASSES 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR STONEWALL BALL. WHICH COMMEMORATES AND CELEBRATES THE BIRTHRIGHT OF THE GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT HERE IN WEST PALM BEACH NO MATTER WHAT YOUR GENDER YOUR SEXUAL ORIENTATION RACE ANYTHING. YOU HAVE A PLACE HERE AT THE SCIENCE CENTER. YOU KNOW, WE’RE ALL ONE BIG COMMUNITY. WE ALL HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER IN ORDER TO REALLY BE A COMMUNITY. IT’S ENSURING A SAFE SPACE ESPECIALLY AFTER RECENT THREATS DURING A PRIDE MONTH EVENT IN WEST PALM. BEACH ACTUALLY PARTNERED WITH PRIDE ON THE BLOCK AND WHEN THEY HAD THE MASS SHOOTING THREAT WE WERE HANDS ON WITH THEM AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT PLAN THE STONEWALL BALL ALSO HAPPENING ON THE HEELS OF THE SWEEPING SUPREME COURT DECISION ON ROE V. WADE OFFICIALS HAVE A MESSAGE YESTERDAY WAS A VERY DARK DAY IN OUR TIME AND THE CURRENT POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT. Officials also ramped up security measures after recent threats made during the ‘Pride on the Block’ event in West Palm Beach

Compass Community Center hosted its 20th annual Stonewall Ball at the Cox Aquarium and Science Center in West Palm Beach Saturday. “Commemorates and celebrates the birthright of the gay rights movement here in West Palm Beach,” Julie Seaver, the executive director of Compass, told WPBF 25 News. There were around 500 guests attending the event, and officials said they also ramped up security measures to ensure everyone is safe.”We actually partnered with ‘Pride on the Block’ and when they had the mass shooting threat, we were hands-on with them and went through a crisis management plan,” Julia Murphy, the chief development officer at Compass, told WPBF 25 News. “We’ve added uniformed and armed police, we’re going to have metal detection as well as bag checks. And then the science center has cameras all around, they have additional staff an so do we. Officials did not take day-of ticket sales for security purposes.”No matter what your gender, your sexual orientation, your race, anything, you have a place here at the science center. We’re all big one community, all have to work together to be a community,” Kristian Zambrana, the director of visitor services at Cox Science Center and Aquarium, told WPBF 25 News.With the Stonewall Ball happening on the heels of the sweeping Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, Compass leaders have a message for the community. “Yesterday was a very dark day in our time and in our political environment. And so tonight, we’re going to celebrate and be joyous and be our authentic selves. And tomorrow, we march,” Seaver said.All proceeds from Saturday’s event go toward Compass’ resources and operations.
