Chirk’s Lauren sets sights on becoming first openly gay Miss Wales – Border Counties Advertizer
A CHIRK woman is setting her sights on becoming the first openly gay person to take the Miss Wales title next month.
Lauren Parkinson came out as gay to her fellow Miss Wales contestants last year after a year of battling with her own emotions and having fears of being judged differently.
The 26-year-old estate agent said she was met with ‘nothing but love’ from fellow contestants and the Miss Wales director, and hopes her decision to come out can inspire the younger generation to be themselves and follow their dreams.
She said: “I think it’s so important. We have representation in sport and most industries really, and to be the first in 2021 would be an incredible achievement.
“It would hopefully mean having more representation to pave the way for other generations to come forward and enter.
“Something I was in fear of was being judged differently after coming out, but I was met with nothing but love and support.
“The director and fellow contestants have been very supportive. I’m being treated exactly the same as anyone else would be.
“It feels like a big weight off my shoulders to know I can finally be my true, authentic self and live life unapologetically being myself.”
Lauren feels it is essential for people to not feel fear over their sexuality, race or religion holding them back or forming any barriers.
During her spare time, Lauren volunteers to raise money for various charities.
Most recently she completed a sponsored walk for Galop – the UK’s the LGBT+ anti-abuse charity.
She believes that Miss Wales truly gives women the chance to pave the way for other generations to come out.
Lauren will travel to Cardiff next month for the Miss Wales contest, with the final being held on Saturday, September 11 at the Riverfront Theatre in Newport.
