Celebrate Juneteenth 2021 in Killeen and Harker Heights – ktemnews.com
Growing up in Florida, I didn’t know the history of Juneteenth and what it meant to African American culture.
Until I got to Texas, where I learned about why we celebrate on or around June 19th, also known as Juneteenth.
On my mother’s side of the family, all of her siblings and my grandparents are from East Texas, so when I moved to Texas as a teenager, I saw firsthand the Juneteenth celebration.
Everyone was hanging out, listening to music, and barbequing. It was like one huge family reunion which I could get used to around this time of the year!
I think most states celebrate our national holiday, not just Texans.
As you know, Juneteenth is a celebration of true Freedom, Justice, and Equity. When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, a body of people was not yet free. They did not receive their just due freedom until well after the ink dried.
It’s a time for celebration and remembrance, and you can be a part of it in Killeen and Harker Heights this Juneteenth.
Come and participate in American history with the Innovation Black Chamber of Commerce and other neighboring organizations hosting Juneteenth events next weekend.
The IBCC will have a Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony on June 18th at 10 am in front of The Village United at 324 East Ave D. The official Juneteenth flag will be mounted on the building throughout the weekend. IBCC will also distribute 204 miniature Juneteenth flags to educate at the flag-raising ceremony.
The event will include:
- Libation Ceremony
- Opening Remarks
- Distribution of Miniature Juneteenth Flags
- A Walk Around the Building 3 times
- Closing Remarks
Judging by the flyer, there will be plenty of ways to participate this Juneteenth.
I know Austin and Round Rock have big Juneteenth Celebrations that I have attended in the past.
I look forward to attending this great event next weekend!
