HARRIS — A stout defense helped Bark River-Harrris’ cause here Saturday in a 30-6 football victory over the Kalkaska Blazers.

The Broncos limited Kalkaska to 143 yards in total offense, including 54 in the first half of this non-conference contest while improving to 3-0.

“We just kept things simple,” said BR-H coach Al Stenberg. “Our defensive line has been physical. We had a few breakdowns and allowed one big pass. Otherwise, we pretty much kept them under wraps.”

Kalkaska scored on its opening drive in the second half when senior quarterback Landen Hart tossed a 42-yard pass to senior Chris Gay to close within 16-6.

“We’ve got to be happy with that,” said Kalkaska coach Jeremy Wilkinson. “I think our passing game may have caught them off guard. Only, we didn’t respond after that. You can’t hang your head just because a few calls don’t go your way. We’ve been through enough adversity. We should know how to handle that. We made too many mistakes. It’s tough when you put yourself in long-yardage situations. They’re a tough team. They’re definitely aggressive on defense.”

The Broncos responded with a lengthy scoring drive which consumed nearly 5 1/2 minutes. Senior Josiah Javurek concluded that drive with a four-yard run up the middle for a 22-6 cushion.

BR-H then secured the decision on senior Luke Shiverski’s 54-yard dash off left tackle with 4:23 remaining in the contest.

Senior Vincent Martin’s spin move through the middle provided the Broncos with a nine-yard TD run and an 8-0 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter.

The Broncos then made it 16-0 when junior QB Ethan Ives plowed through the middle on a three-yard run with 7:40 remaining in the second.

BR-H had an opportunity to make it a three-score game shortly before halftime but failed to capitalize.

The Broncos collected 299 yards in total offense, gaining 282 on the ground. Martin rushed 20 times for 129, and Shiverski added 115 in 13 attempts. Ives hit 1-of-4 passes for 17.

Hart completed all four of his aerials for 72 yards in the second half. Gay caught three for 56 and a TD.

Senior defense end Corbin LaFave and junior end Mitch Bloniarz led the Broncos in tackles.

BR-H, which also won the jayvee game 58-42, travels to Houghton Saturday. The Blazers host Tawas Area Saturday.
