Billy Porter, Tom Daley and Drag Race UK icon Bimini Bon Boulash were among the winners at the star-studded Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards 2021.
Some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry turned up to the awards ceremony, which took place in London on Wednesday night (6 October). Alan Carr, Stephen Fry, Ella Henderson, the cast of It’s a Sin, Munroe Bergdorf, Rylan and Michelle Visage were among those in attendance.
Guests were treated to a powerful performance from musical theatre legend Elaine Page, who sang “I Know Him So Well” from Jesus Christ Superstar. She was later given the Honorary Gay award, for obvious reasons.
Bimini Bon Boulash also performed on the night before Steps took to the stage to close out the Attitude Awards 2021 with a five song set.
Pose icon Billy Porter was among the stars in attendance – the legendary actor flew in from the United States to accept the “Man of the Year” award in recognition of his work on the groundbreaking FX series. Scissor Sisters star Jake Shears presented him with the award.
Tom Daley was given the Sport Award in recognition of his incredible achievements as an Olympic diver by Alan Carr and Tia Kofi, while Bimini was given the Style Award.
Steps and Netflix’s Sex Education were among the winners at the Attitude Awards 2021
Netflix’s hugely popular series Sex Education was given the Gamechanger Award on the night, while Steps – the legendary British group – won the Icon Award.
Adele Roberts walked away with the Broadcast Award while Ben Aldridge took home the Television Award. It’s a Sin, the Channel 4 series that told the story of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s London, was presented with the Inspiration Award by Stephen Fry.
Elsewhere, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie star Max Harwood won the Breakthrough Award for his heartfelt performance in the Amazon Prime film, which is based on the smash-hit West End musical of the same name.
Finally, Chella Man – an American model, actor, artist, YouTuber and LGBTQ activist – walked away with the Hero Award. Chella Man has won praise for sharing his experiences as a transgender, deaf, genderqueer Jewish person of colour.
The Attitude Awards went ahead after the event was forced to move to a virtual format in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Darren Styles, publisher of Attitude Magazine, said: “A year away on account of COVID meant the world’s biggest LGBTQ media brand switched to an online offering in 2020, garnering more than two million viewers on multiple channels along the way.
“But there is nothing like 650 people in a room, dressed to the nines, celebrating the LGBTQ community to get the blood pumping. Especially if you headline with Steps. 2021 is the comeback year, the year to say you were there!”
