Ben Shapiro has come up with the most bizarre argument against gay marriage: imaginary Martians – LGBTQ Nation

Far-right Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro has come up with a bizarre reason to oppose LGBTQ marriage rights: Martians oppose it, so you should too.

Speaking with anti-transgender activist Matt Walsh, Shapiro ranted about how most people think that the only reason to be opposed to marriage equality is religion.

“That’s really the only reason at all,” he said. “That the only reason – we’ll allow you to have these crazy beliefs so long as you can show that they’re crazy beliefs. So long as you can show that the reason you believe a marriage is between a man and a woman is because you read it in a book, and because you really believe the book – they keep saying sincere religious belief.”

“I don’t even know how you measure sincere religious belief,” he continued. Both Shapiro and Walsh are religious and have talked about how they believe religion should inform politics more. “I’m highly annoyed by the constant derogation of non-religious arguments into religious arguments. This is what the left loves to do.”

Well, then what is the non-religious, non-discriminatory, and totally logical argument against same-sex marriage?

Martians, it turns out. More specifically, Shapiro imagines Martians would oppose same-sex marriage, so therefore Earthlings must too.

“The argument for marriage has literally nothing to do with religion,” he said, agitated, as Walsh looked bored. “You could be a visitor from Mars and you could see that all of human procreation relies on man/woman/child. This is not particularly difficult stuff. By essentially boxing in the argument in favor of traditional marriage into ‘Well if you’re a crazy religious believer, maybe we’ll let you have that.’”

The procreation argument has been made for decades against marriage equality, and LGBTQ advocates generally point out that there are many opposite-sex couples who don’t or can’t procreate but they’re still allowed to get married and also many same-sex couples who do have children. They also argue that if marriage only exists for the sake of children, then why doesn’t the government actually monitor couples to see if they’re procreating or even ask if they have plans to have children?

On Twitter, Shapiro got mocked for his out-of-this-world opposition to equal rights for LGBTQ people.
