In the first round, Gay trumped Today host Maura Derrane with 68% of the votes.

The original broadcasting icon passed away in 2019 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Following his death, an outpouring of love came from both Ireland’s most famous and celebrated faces and the general public to celebrate his impact on the country’s cultural and social development.

In recent weeks, RTÉ documentary Dear Gay looked back on tens of thousands of letters sent to Gay by members of the public over the span of three decades.

Meanwhile, Pat Kenny took over from Gay once he stepped down from The Late Late Show in 1999 for the new millennium.

Kenny had previously spoken about his ‘friendly rivalry’ with his predecessor as the two scrambled for ratings on The Late Late Show and Kenny Live!

Upon his death, Pat remarked his burning envy when Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, chose to appear on The Late Late Show rather than his own.

The veteran broadcaster edged Lucy Kennedy out in the first round but can he take on Gay once and for all?
