Anthony Edwards ‘incredibly sorry’ for posting an anti-gay video to social media – NBC News
Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves apologized Sunday for anti-LGBTQ remarks he made in a video posted to Instagram over the weekend.
In the now-deleted video, Edwards, 21, rolls down a car window and calls a group of shirtless men “queer” as another person in the car laughs in the background. After a wave of backlash on social media, Edwards said he was “incredibly sorry.”
“What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry,” Edwards tweeted Sunday. “It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!”
The NBA could fine Edwards because of the incident, which most likely violates its social media guidelines. Last year, NBA star Kevin Durant was fined $50,000 for using “offensive and derogatory language on social media” after a homophobic rant. In 2011, the Chicago Bulls’ Joakim Noah was fined a similar amount for hurling an anti-gay slur at a fan.
Edwards is entering his third season as a shooting guard for the Timberwolves.
The NBA is reviewing the matter, the league’s spokesman, Mike Bass, told NBC News in an email.
The Timberwolves reprimanded Edwards in a statement distributed by the team on Monday.
“We are disappointed in the language and actions Anthony Edwards displayed on social media,” the team’s president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, said in the statement. “The Timberwolves are committed to being an inclusive and welcoming organization for all and apologize for the offense this has caused to so many.”
