Andrew Leroy “Andy” Gay – Jones County News

Andrew Leroy “Andy” Gay, 83, of Creekside Drive, Gray, GA, passed away Aug. 28, 2022, after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary, Jones County Chapel.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Andy was born at home in rural Laurens County, GA to the late Harrell Gay and the late Willa Mae Farmer Gay. Andy attended grammar school in Laurens County and moved with his family to Macon in 1952. He began delivering the Macon Telegraph on a bicycle a few months later, then worked at a gas station while attending Lanier High School. He graduated from Lanier High School in 1957 and met the love of his life shortly there-after at Durr’s Skating Rink. They were married for 57 years. He worked for A. S. Hatcher Co. for three years as an outboard motor mechanic, Bibb Mfg. Co for thirty-five years as a shift supervisor and Elliott Machine Shop for fourteen years as Office and Safety Manager.

He proudly served his country in the US Army Signal Corps as a CryptoTeletype Operator in Germany near the “Iron Curtain” during the Russian blockade of Cuba and at the time of President Kennedy’s assignation. In his middle years he fished, golfed and was a hobby pilot.

He held a commercial pilot’s license for single engine plane. He loved photography and started with an 8 millimeter movie camera. He always carried a camera in his pocket.

Andy was predeceased by his parents, brother, Wayne E. Gay and grandaughter, Bailey Caroline Galeazzo. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Valentine Gay; daughter, Carla Galeazzo; son, Todd (Christy) Gay; 4 grandchildren, Cason Galeazzo, Brylie Galeazzo, Tyler (Taylor) Gay, and Courtney Gay; and 1 great grandson, River Gay.
