The first time I recall watching Rudy Gay play, he was #8 on the Sacramento Kings. A leader of a “big 3” joined with Ben McLemore and Boogie Cousins. Something in his demeanor told me he was a Spursy player. I hoped against all logic that he would end up with the Silver & Black and a few years later, my wish was granted.
Rudy has been a solid player, a great locker room presence, a calming force, and has lived up to my expectations of his worthiness to play with my favorite team. His scoring was timely and effective, as was his ability to shape some of the new prospects.
One thing that made me respect and admire him even more was how he helped DeMar DeRozan warm up to his unplanned move to the Alamo City, selling him on the team, the coach, and San Antonio overall.
I have yet to find a Spurs fan who is mad that Rudy signed with Utah this summer. Overall, it seems like a good fit for him a he turns 36 today and cannot play the minutes he did just a few years back. The Utah Jazz are in their pocket and with a healthy roster could be favored to make a run a the title this season. The match may just work for both.
To Rudy Gay, thank you for coming to San Antonio, sharing your passion, playing with heart, and leaving on good terms. Spurs fans needed that.
