A 1970s gay bar softball team took on the SFPD. The game was epic – San Francisco Chronicle

SFPD chief Con Murphy, who was appointed in 1980 on a pledge to diversify the SFPD, tried to revive the game and failed. But the game’s popularity set a foundation for more organized gay sports in the city, and the first Gay Games in San Francisco in 1982 and 1986. Former Oakland A’s player Glenn Burke, the first openly gay Major League Baseball player, participated in the Gay Games and joined the Pendulum Pirates. The Games continue, set for Hong Kong and Guadalajara in 2023.
