6 students sent to hospital following school bus crash – WSAZ

WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Six students were injured and sent to the hospital Monday morning after a crash in Wayne County involving a school bus, according to Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander.

“The first thing is safety,” Alexander said. “The safety of the students and the safety of the driver, and unfortunately in this situation we do believe there’s been some injuries. We don’t believe there’s been any serious injuries, but we do have some kids that are being checked out medically.”

Officials say about 40 students were onboard at the time of the accident along Mill Creek Road in Fort Gay.

Dispatchers tell WSAZ.com a bus driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole.

Superintendent Alexander said he learned about the accident Monday morning after a report that the elementary and another school was out of power.

“Of course with the power being out in the schools, we had Fort Gay Pre-K through eighth, we had to shut it down at 8:30 this morning,” Alexander said.

He says it was a mixture of Fort Gay Elementary students and Tolsia High School students aboard the bus at the time of the crash.

Other school buses had to come in to pick the students up while law enforcement worked to call families. Now, they’re working to figure out what caused the crash.

“I think there were some reports that there may have been a deer seen, but all of that’s preliminary,” Alexander said. “We don’t know exactly what happened. We’ll wait for the investigation results.”

Alexander says it was a mixture of Fort Gay Elementary students and Tolsia High School students onboard the bus at the time of the crash.

Alexander says the district will follow an investigation process outlined by the state to determine any next steps.

While Superintendent Alexander says he does not know how badly the students sent to the hospital were injured, he does not believe any injuries are life-threatening.
